VOLUNTEER EXPECTATIONS

Sprout shifts are weekly commitments from June 16th to August 29th.

For example, Sally could commit to the 1.5-hour weekly Monday Meal Prep shift. We understand Sally may need to miss occasionally due to other summer plans. To ensure a successful program, we kindly ask volunteers to only commit to a weekly shift if they can be there for at least 7 out of 11 weeks of summer (4 allowed absences).

Sprout is most successful when volunteers have no more than four planned absences for the summer and communicate their unavailability to HFR staff more than a week in advance.

ADOPT-A-SHIFT: a great option for organizations and teams!

Does your family, place of work, church, or other organization wish to adopt a shift? By making this volunteer commitment, an organization commits to adopting one meal prep shift for the whole summer. These shifts are great ways for teams to make volunteering a weekly part of their routine, ensuring a time window removed from their day-to-day business dedicated to expanding food access.

Example: Ali’s Construction Co. can adopt the Meal Prep shift on Mondays, 4:00-5:30 PM. Ali’s Construction Co. would select one Shift Captain to coordinate their volunteers and ensure that every shift has 3-4 volunteers. Say Billy is the Shift Captain—he does not need to be at every shift, but he needs to ensure that 3-4 of his coworkers are there weekly from 4:00-5:30 PM.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Meal Prep shifts are led by the Sprout Lead Cook. Volunteers support the Lead Cook in preparing 200-300 lunches daily. Duties include prepping fruit, making sandwiches, bagging lunches, cleaning, and more.

  • HFR understands that unplanned absences will arise occasionally (being sick, car issues, etc.), but communication is still expected as soon as possible so other arrangements can be made. Volunteers consistently canceling at the last minute will be asked to reconsider their commitment.

  • Weekly volunteers have been shown to make Sprout as successful as possible. At this time, HFR is not accepting volunteers who are less than weekly. An alternative would be to sign up with a friend for the shift and split the shift, alternating weeks. This would mean one volunteer does 6 weeks total and the other does 5 weeks total. This is a great way to share the responsibility of one shift.

  • Some volunteers may want to do more than one weekly shift—we don’t recommend more than two weekly shifts per volunteer. If you want to commit to more, we recommend two weekly shifts, plus you can be available as a substitute volunteer for other shifts as needed.

  • Of course! Meal Prep shifts have space for four volunteers total. If you have friends interested in volunteering, please let Shell know. If you want to bring more than one friend, please consider the Adopt-a-shift option above: shell@holefoodrescue.org.
