Our Story
When Ali Dunford, Hole Food Rescue’s founder, moved to Jackson in 2012 she began climbing into grocery store dumpsters looking for nutritious, still edible food to stretch her income. Day after day Ali discovered tons of high-quality food thrown away simply because of its sell-by date. Many times she found enough to host dinner parties for friends! After becoming overwhelmed with the amount of waste she encountered, she set out to find a solution and Hole Food Rescue was founded. Under Ali’s leadership, Hole Food Rescue grew to an organization of 100+ volunteers, rescued over one million pounds of food from going to waste, and in turn, helped countless community members stretch their income by receiving this rescued food for their families.

On June 24, 2013 Hole Food Rescue performs its first food rescue from Jackson Whole Grocer as a subsidiary of the Jackson Cupboard.

Hole Food Rescue becomes it’s own 501(c)3 nonprofit and hires its first two staff members.

Hole Food Rescue reaches a milestone of rescuing five hundred thousand pounds of food and hosts its first Half-a-Million Pound Party, a Zero Waste event.

Hole Food Rescue (HFR) rescues one million pounds of food and partners with Teton County School District to launch an in-school pantry at Munger Elementary.

HFR launches their Sprout Summer Lunch Program for One22 Unified Summer Scholarship campers.

6,300 free lunches are provided to children through the Sprout Summer Lunch program. Food for the Community // Comida de la Comunidad is launched to distribute free, rescued, nutritious food directly to people.

The Food for the Community // Comida de la Comunidad program is expanded to seven locations, providing free food to approximately 200 families each month. The Sprout Weekend Food Bag program is launched to ensure no child is without food over the weekend.

HFR celebrates reaching two million pounds of food rescued since its inception. Sprout program expansion enables HFR to reach 27% more children and families.

Hole Food Rescue (HFR) finds an affordable, spacious new home tat can secure its commitment to serve the community for years to come. The HFR team grows to 200 volunteers.
FATE OF A PEPPER
Across the U.S. 40% of all food is wasted, $441 million squandered every day, and 164 million pounds of food sent to landfills around the country. Locally, Teton County, WY transports five semi-truck loads to Bonneville County Landfill every single day.
